Focuses on three main characters (Qiao Feng, Duan Yu, and Xu Zhu) and how their lives intertwine. However, I didn't feel very attached to any of them -- probably detracted from my enjoyment of the books.

It was written originally to describe 8 types of people in the world according to Buddhism text. However, as you progress to the second or third book, the story plot goes much larger. Fantastic read. This is like the Star War of Asian novels.
