Hilde had come a long way since her dream of becoming a singer was shattered when her father made arrangements for her to work as a housekeeper in Berlin at the tender age of fourteen.
Hilde’s life is thrown into turmoil in Berlin during the late 1920’s early 1930’s. Having Polish friends meant it was becoming increasingly unsafe for her to stay there and she finds a new life in the Harz mountains.
In Goslar, Hilde meets her husband, Karl, a young officer in the German Army.
When he joins the 7th Panzer Brigade led by General Erwin Rommel at the beginning of World War II, Hilde is left to bring up their children in war-torn Germany.
Hilde’s story is based on facts and is told here by her youngest daughter, Elisabeth.

I soon became drawn into the story of Hilde and found it easy to relate to all the characters. The complexity of life during World War 2 is described very well, also the remarkable friendships, the great love between Hilde and her husband, and the hardships they all experienced. Elisabeth Marrion has written this novel based on the story of her mother, and it is well worth reading.Review by Tom Cooney Jr. Elisabeth's book reads easily and quickly involved me. Elisabeth introduces her mother to us within a few pages. I really enjoyed meeting the author's mother, extended family, and the others within that circle of friends who faced so much turmoil and pain during the first half of the 20th century. Hilde, and people like her, help define the demarcations of a war fought abroad and on their homeland. Hilde had the strength to hold her family together even as she danced with Rommel. I received a copy of this novel through the goodreads first reads program.This book is set in the first person from the prospective of Hilde, a German woman, and follows her life through the 2nd world war. This period is always fascinating, (this book even more so as the author is Hilde's granddaughter), but I especially enjoyed the fresh prospective of a German woman's point of view. The Night I Danced with Rommel by Elisabeth Marrion is emotionally gripping. I was moved and touched, horrified and inspired. This is a very well written historical period piece that was surprisingly unique. The author had a way of telling this story in her own way. Special. Hilde, the young German woman attracted my attention right away.
