I love reading memoirs like this, because you get to live a life that you otherwise would never be able to. Whether you're reading about Boston in the 60's and 70's, living in war-torn Germany in the 40's, or Africa as a missionary, it's always just so fascinating to me. To live so humbly, where an American $1 can feed a family of 6 for a month, is just amazing.(as always with memoirs, sometimes I have a hard time distinguishing from reviewing the author's life, to reviewing the actual book)

What an enjoyable book! Because of her talent for imagery, I was able to experience every adventure with Susan (the author and main character of the book).I was with her in mud huts, military take overs, helplessly holding sick children, saving lives, romantic - and sometimes unromantic - encounters. I felt the angst that comes with wanting to achieve two divergent dreams in life: saving the world in Africa and starting a family in the U.S. Artfully woven within her candid stories is African

I have never personally been to Africa, but I have to admit the environment does intrigue me. I loved that this was a way to get a inside look into how different life can be over seas. Susan Corbett has done a great job of making sure her reader has plenty of descriptive material to imagine the world she is talking about. Her experience feel real and are very compelling. Overall a great memoir, though provoking and deep.

A writer, community organizer, and consultant in program management, micro-enterprise development, family planning, and HIV/AIDS education, Susan Corbett began her community development career in 1976 as a Peace Corps Volunteer, working in a health clinic in Liberia, West Africa. In 1979, she joined Save the Children Federation as a program coordinator for cooperative and small business projects

This was a memoir that will really keep you invested the entire time. The author does a great job of drawing on experiences with the culture to add to the detail and make the novel authentic. I think that overall the thing that I took with me from this novel was the fact that there is still good in people and humanity. Often times in the news you only see the bad and I think that this novel really helps instill hope in the future of mankind. This really does shine a light on the life that these

What a powerful novel and powerful voice Susan Corbett has. This was a very real story and it provided plenty of life lessons along the way. This is a heartwrenching story that teaches us that while life throws us major curveballs, we are able to overcoming. Empowering and Thought-Provoking and Enlightening all at once.

4.5 stars really.It was such a compelling memoir of a story that I don't think I would ever be brave enough to live myself. I can't imagine working so hard to do such marvellous things with so little support from the people you love. The story brought me from laughter to tears and back around again, and I was only reading the story not living it. But the beauty of the writing and poetic descriptions let me believe they were my memories too.The story is very inspiring when you stand back and look
