Coretta Scott King Award and Honor winners Joyce Carol Thomas and Floyd Cooper capture one girl's amazing journey west with her family, based on the author's true story of her move from Oklahoma to California in 1948. Terrific sights and flavors welcome them with sweet possibility, reflected in the faces of people of all races, cultures, and ethnicities.Where oranges are as big as grapefruits and bears fish like men-California awaits, as one girl makes the exciting cross-country move by train with her family. Awe-inspiring scenes come to life as soaring mountains give way to the sweeping Golden Gate. The adventure of this world unfolds as the train takes them to a place where people from all paths come together, sipping Mexican hot chocolate and eating African bread, and music from the welcome party fills the air. This tells the tale of many who made this same trip, drawn by a land filled with plenty and promise, the land of milk and honey.
in this breathtaking and gorgeous story, the dynamic duo of Joyce Carol Thomas and Floyd Cooper capture the anticipation and thrill of a girl on the brink of her new life.

I liked this book because it shows an inspiring adventure from one place to another. I can teach students about adventure. The pages are glossy, full page bleed, and motif. This reminds me of moving from one place to another. This autobiographical book by Joyce Carol Thomas depicts her family's trip to California from Oklahoma in 1948 by train. Its poetic form traces their journey acrross the Western US to San Francisco. Floyd Cooper's lush illustrations add beautiful detail to the text. This should be a notable and possibly a Coretta Scott Award contender.
Picture book memoir. Beautiful writing, and beautiful illustrations. Not sure it's a book kids would be drawn to on their own.
Black history. Bay Area, California. Repeating phrase. Soft, warm illustrations.
Historical fiction in poetic form- would be great for multicultural storytelling or to introduce a social studies unit.
this would be great in a book club. (yes, it is too short and a kids book and in verse. still would make a great book club selection.)
The illustrations are just wonderful and the expressions on young faces pull you right into the book. The poetry is exceptional, as the poet is an expert at using sensory language. There is a short narrative biography in the back that is helpful, too.
