I strongly recommend the Barnes and Noble version of this book for the Non-native speakers of English. I loved the fact that this book had the meanings of some of the words. It was quite helpful.Unfortunately, I did not enjoy the book as much as I thought I would. However, I liked the comical parts, the Ironies, and the sections where religion was discussed. Joyce's use of stream-of-consciousness was not satisfactory to me.Conflicts in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I'm currently on page 210, which is the end of chapter 2 in my book. Conflict within the novel begins with man vs. man and man vs. self:Father Dolan unjustly punishes Stephen for not doing his work, not believing his story about breaking his glasses and calling him a "lazy little schemer" - Dolan is instantlyprojected as an antagonist that goes against Stephen. Later in that chapter, Stephan deals withan internal struggle before he stands up
What can a first time reader of Joyce say about a master who has more than a fair share of critical and analytical studies racked against him? He's a heavy weight in XX Century fiction. Time to start Ulysses.
I really wanted to like this, but Joyce's writing is just so dry and boring. So much so that, about a year after picking this book up, I've had to just put it down halfway through Dubliners. Portrait had a fairly interesting plot line and would have been at least semi-enjoyable if not for Stephen's bland characterization. As for the Dubliners collection... I'd say there were maybe one or two stories I actually found anything enjoyable about. The rest were about random, boring snapshots of life
I understand that the novel is profound and breaks rules and was something completely new for the time, making it the ideal read for 11th grade English students. But for me, the writing style was hard to adapt to and the plot never fully interested me. Do not fault Joyce for this, and his writing is uniquely him and offers something completely fresh every time you read it, it just wasn't the book for me.
